NMEA0183 and NMEA2000 are standards for communication between navigational instruments on ships. The standard is defined by the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA). Meanwhile, the protocols are also used for communication between GPS receivers and PCs and mobile devices.
In NMEA networks, the data of various sensors (GPS, depth gauge, log, anemometer, compass, autopilot) are combined and transmitted in a network. One or more displays can show the desired data.
For some time now, NMEA2000 has increasingly replaced NMEA0183 as the standard and is a CAN bus system on board modern boats. The sensors or encoders and displays for the presentation of the data come from the different manufacturers B&G, Simrad, Garmin,...
